Comment string embedded in search string

Post by ChrisGreaves »

The more I explore Filters, Shortcut keys, startup options such as Home Screen, the more I want to lodge comments with the search string.

My current Home screen is "
t:\media\music ext:mp3 sizedupe:
" which, the theory goes, might induce me to chip away at some 8,000 items.
I'd love (in this case in my Tools, Options, Home panel include "deal with duplicate audio files" or perhaps "my latest dupe search string" or even "Based on Post 108480".
I am aware of "nop:" from 2021 and of "/comments" in bookmarks in the same thread.

I grew up with:-
(1) The letter "C" in column 1 (FORTRAN 1967)
(2) The single quote " ' " as a signal to ignore all characters to the right (VBA to 2026)
(3) An unimaginable number of methods in between those two, including the lamp symbol in APL (1970)

I'd love to have a single user-defined symbol (Tools, Options, Advanced) which could be used to ignore analysis of any part of a search string.
A string of characters between two of those symbols would be ignored
A string of characters between one of those symbols and the next occurrence of a carriage-return would be ignored

I can think of a few hurdles, but they are just hurdles; I don't see them as obstacles.

Thanks for any comments.

A string of characters between two of those symbols would be ignored
Not really possible.
The only way to do this is with:
nop:<my search comment>

So anything between
nop:<
and
>
is ignored.

A string of characters between one of those symbols and the next occurrence of a carriage-return would be ignored
The smallest macro you can create is two characters.
The macro can be one character, but to reference the macro it needs the trailing colon (
:
).

To define a
':
macro to ignore the rest of the search:
In Everything, type in the following search and press ENTER:
/define '=nop*:

Example usage:
abc 123 ':Search for abc AND 123

/define

Thank you Void. I began experimenting with NOP: thinking that the macro cover can come later.
[user error alert!]
My original search string is
t:\media\music ext:mp3 sizedupe:
; this works well.
I tried using NOP: on the sizedupe: segment, then I tried using NOP! on the rest of the search string except for the data drive T: identifier.
Untitled.jpg
I expected to see about 250,000 items.
I suspect my mistake was eliding that space AFTER the t: and BEFORE the nop:. Yes?
This would be explained by Everything's mechanical analysis of that search string, looking for lexical atoms separated by non-escape spaces; so that later, when I write your definition of the single-quote macro, I should, with my user error, trip up in the same way, I think,
That is
t:'what happens here?
is going to show zero results.
Thanks, Chris
