Forward/Back doesn't remember all searches
I'll often perform a search {A}, then clear it and do a different search {B} (or modify the first search), then do another search {C}. I'll then want to go back to search {B}, but when I hit back, it takes me back to search {A}, skipping {B} which wasn't remembered. This would be like doing a web search, clicking into a link to its home page, then clicking to a different page on that link, and hitting back taking you back to the search. While I suppose it could get taken too far if it remembered every search, as technically that could be every single key press, and I certainly wouldn't recommend that, it should remember, and go back through, the major changes. If not by significance (i.e. don't "remember" two different "searches" as different with a difference of just a few characters, but remember them as different searches if entire words are, and certainly the entire thing is, replaced. I don't know if it only keeps it in history for going back if you tab/click into the results pane or what, but even if I do a search, wait a bit, do another, wait a bit, and do another, where you'd think the time between them would register them as "different," the middle search (and sometimes more than one) isn't remembered. This happens very frequently, so not just an edge case here and there.

Re: Forward/Back doesn't remember all searches
Everything will add searches to your history when you press ENTER from the search box or perform an action on a result.
This is done by default to avoid filling your search history with each change.
Please try setting Everything to add a search to your history after a small delay:

Re: Forward/Back doesn't remember all searches
I believe in 1.4x it was defaulted to do this after a short time.
With no exposed settings, every time you pressed enter it'd save a count and also when you focused the result list. (So every search was strangely built to always double the count as it always focused results list on search, but maybe you could disable that already in v1.4x. Keeping focus after searching in v1.5x is "search_edit_enter_action=0")
In v1.5x the second one is now "search_history_add_on_listview_set_focus=1".
v1.5x also added the ability for the search file to save after every search so it doesn't only save on window exit with "search_history_save_on_change=1"
I use it as I save every revision, but it's still useful in case the process crashes.
Unfortunately there isn't a save on change for run history AFAIK. You still have to exit the window for that to save.
The last option void already noted above, I presume it was probably set to around 5000 in 1.4x unless I'm thinking of the focus thing and 1.4x never saved after a delay..

Re: Forward/Back doesn't remember all searches
I never hit enter after searching, since the searches are instant as you type. I've set the delay setting to 2000 (it's not specified, but I assume that's ms). As long as it doesn't slow things down by saving too often, I'd rather have too many saved that I have to go back through to get to a previous search than not have ones saved and have to manually retype a search. I do feel like settings like this should be placed in the general settings where they're obvious and easy to see and find rather than an "advanced" section with what appears to be hundreds (thousands?) of options to sift through. And while there is a search, that relies on knowing what to search for, etc. Ultimately, I need to remember to look there when I'm wanting to do something special, as this is at least the second time I bugged void about something that could be handled through these settings.
It would also help if the advanced options had descriptions, both to be able to tell what they do without having to search each questionable one, and to have the descriptions included in the search to help find desired settings, as well as being able to view functional vs cosmetic ones, though I imagine that would be quite an undertaking due to the massive quantity of them.

Re: Forward/Back doesn't remember all searches
It would simplify everything by doing so, you can keep the focus with search_edit_enter_action set to none IIRC. I wrote above search_edit_enter_action=0 but I don't remember and cba to check what that says within EBV.vertigo wrote: Mon Oct 05, 2026 11:23 pm I never hit enter after searching, since the searches are instant as you type. That would essentially be the same thing as "search as you type" but you control what gets saved and if you have to press enter, you couldn't add something to history that you didn't intend to search.
Doesn't search as you type lag hard, maybe it depends on the size of the instance and how much is currently awake in memory..
Many settings could be, but he seems to make decisions based on what he thinks should be where instead of anything more helpful.vertigo wrote: Mon Oct 05, 2026 11:23 pm I do feel like settings like this should be placed in the general settings where they're obvious and easy to see and find rather than an "advanced" section with what appears to be hundreds (thousands?) of options to sift through. Reminds me of those that think more than a few-several options in a settings menu are "too many" options so they just don't add any more at all.
At least unlike those devs, he does keep the settings..just in their own plain list of every single one.
Idk how that makes things better, but at least they exist at all. He even moved content indexing from being one of the settings pages to advanced page. So what does exist in their own page aren't safe from no longer being there.
I think I remember reading something about that being a thing that might be added within EBV itself, but it could be 2 things I merged together due to poor memory.vertigo wrote: Mon Oct 05, 2026 11:23 pm It would also help if the advanced options had descriptions, both to be able to tell what they do without having to search each questionable one, and to have the descriptions included in the search to help find desired settings, as well as being able to view functional vs cosmetic ones, though I imagine that would be quite an undertaking due to the massive quantity of them.
Anyway a good chunk if not all have descriptions in:
viewtopic.php?t=9994
For example
search_history_add_delay
Set to the number of milliseconds to wait before automatically adding the current search to your search history.
Set to 0 to disable. (default)

Re: Forward/Back doesn't remember all searches
Search as you type is instant for me, on an older, albeit powerful when built, computer with multiple drives and a lot of tabs. No delay at all. I like having the results filter instantly, so it's not just search as you type, but type as you search, i.e. I modify the search as I see the results. So hitting enter would slow things down for me and just feel clunky.Herkules97 wrote: Wed Oct 07, 2026 11:01 am Doesn't search as you type lag hard, maybe it depends on the size of the instance and how much is currently awake in memory..
It's still a lot better than some programs where you have to manually edit a config file (though there are apparently a lot of Everything settings that require that). I do understand that too many settings can be a turn-off for some users and either deter them from using the program or at least keep them from making even the most basic settings adjustments, thereby hampering their experience. It's a fine balance. And there's always going to be disagreement on which settings are/should be "basic" vs "advanced." Not to mention that, especially with so many, trying to figure out where the best place for different settings can be challenging. Personally, I think the best approach is having a selector in settings like beginner/intermediate/advanced/expert which adjusts which settings show, that way they can be placed in appropriate locations within settings rather than all grouped together, making them easier to find and keeping each individual area cleaner vs thousands in one place, as well as having a search for searching all settings (which this, of course, has for advanced, but that's more limited because it only searches those and you have to go there instead of having a universal settings search).Herkules97 wrote: Wed Oct 07, 2026 11:01 am Many settings could be, but he seems to make decisions based on what he thinks should be where instead of anything more helpful.

Ultimately, I'm fine with how it is, as I just have to remember to go looking there, it's just a problem because it makes it more likely people will come asking for an already existing feature/option, like I did. And that's on me, I should have looked more thoroughly, but it's going to happen, more so with a setup like how it is.
Thanks, looks like a good reference. So yeah, that info just needs to be added to the Everything advanced options, so a Description column where that info is added and make it searchable. Seems like that should be only slightly more complex than a copy/paste job to do. Hell, if @void wanted to do it but needed the info in a csv format or something, I could probably do that fairly easily.Herkules97 wrote: Wed Oct 07, 2026 11:01 am Anyway a good chunk if not all have descriptions in:
