Feature Request: Conditional Background Colour for Entire Result Row

Post by MixnMillion »

Hi David,

I’m using Everything 1.5 together with VirtualDJ to manage a very large music library across several internal and external drives.

I’ve built a small bridge that reads the colour assigned to each physical file in VirtualDJ and creates Everything Color Filters using the file’s exact full path.

The system is now working well:

VirtualDJ Green → Green text in Everything
VirtualDJ Cyan/Teal → Cyan/Teal text in Everything
Other colours → Normal Everything display

The exact-path matching is important because I can have many copies or different versions of the same song on different drives. I need the colour to apply only to the exact physical file that has been processed in VirtualDJ.

What would make this considerably easier to see would be an option in Color Filters to set the background colour of the entire matching result row, rather than only the foreground/text colour.

Ideally, I would like:

Green status: entire result row with a green background
Cyan/Teal status: entire result row with a cyan/teal background
Normal file: standard Everything background

The background would ideally extend across the complete result row (Name, Type, Length, Date Modified, Size, Path, etc.).

I understand this may be more complicated because Everything has different colours for selection and other result-list states. Even a background_color / background_dark_color property in color_filters, with the normal selection colour taking precedence when a row is selected, would be extremely useful.

This isn't purely cosmetic in my case. I use the colours as a visual workflow:

Green = fully curated and filed
Cyan/Teal = fully curated but still needs filing

When I search for an artist and Everything returns perhaps 20 copies or versions from different drives, I can immediately identify which exact physical files I have already processed.

I have attached a screenshot of my current working result and a mock-up showing the full-row highlighting I am hoping to achieve.

The existing foreground Color Filters have already made this workflow possible. Conditional row backgrounds would make the status substantially easier to recognise at a glance, particularly for users who find coloured text alone difficult to distinguish.

Thanks for considering it, and thanks for Everything — it has become a very useful part of my music-library workflow.

Jonathan

Support for all color states (including background colour) with colour filters is on my TODO list.

Thank you for the suggestions and feedback.
