Folder Run Count and Date Run are not updated when using "Open Path" or clicking internal file's Path column
Everything 1.5.0.1418b

It worked fine in Everything 1.4

I sort results by Date Run column (added) to have frequently used files available instantly.

• When search results are displayed and I click a file from list, Date Run and Run Count are properly updated.
• When I right-click a result item and choose "Open Path", Date Run and Run Count are not updated neither for the clicked file nor the containing folder.
• When I double-click a folder in the Path column, next to the found file to open such folder, Date Run and Run Count are not updated neither for the clicked file nor the containing folder.

Old behavior / expected:
Date Run and Run Count are updated for the result which folder was opened.

Ideal:
Date Run and Run Count are updated according to target configuration: result item / opened folder / both (/ none?).

There are last run updating settings in advanced configuration:

Code: Select all

inc_run_count_on_context_menu_invoke

and

Code: Select all

inc_run_count_on_drag_drop

, but none of them affects this issue.
In 1.4, the counter was updated on folder usage and not on other context menus like "Open with Code", which also allowed some flexibility.

Open Path not incrementing the run count is by design for Everything 1.5.

I will add an option to increase the run count when opening the path in the next update.

Everything 1.5.0.1419b adds a run_history_increase_run_count_on_open_path advanced setting.

When enabled and opening a path, the run count for that item will be incremented.

To enable run_history_increase_run_count_on_open_path:

• In Everything 1.5, from the Tools menu, click Options.
• Click the Advanced tab on the left.
• To the right of Show settings containing, search for:
  run history
• Select: run_history_increase_run_count_on_open_path
• Set the value to: true
• Click OK.

Enabling will match the Everything 1.4 behavior when opening paths.

I've also renamed the settings to be more inline with my naming convention:
inc_run_count_on_context_menu_invoke => run_history_increase_run_count_on_context_menu_invoke
inc_run_count_on_drag_drop => run_history_increase_run_count_on_drag_drop
I've added the old names as aliases.

I got to this issue after posting in the (slightly different) Increase run count when clicking "path" thread. I found the setting in the Advanced settings by myself and set it to true, but neither double-clicking in the Path column, nor clicking "Open Path" from the context menu changed Run Count/Date Run...

I'm running on 1.5.0.1423b (x64) - maybe a regression?

I thought it used to work like this for the Path column, but I never had a 1419b instance. Did it work in 1422b? Could be like 1422b not saving to search history if you have an automatic search from the Home page in settings window. That was fixed in 1423b, maybe 1425b will have this fixed but I haven't tested 1424b so maybe it's fixed there.

I will consider an option to increment the run count for the path that is opened with Open Path.

This was apparently posted today and confusingly is for something that already works. Open Path adds run count.
What doesn't is double-clicking in the path column.

Unclear if Void means adding a run count to the folder itself that you open into..Then that doesn't exist right now. If you open path to X:\X.y, then X:\ itself also gets a run count?

I'll test the latest version and update here if still not ok.

Regarding the other issue mentioned, the idea indeed is to update the Run metadata on the Path/folder itself, since that is what the action ("Open path") was invoked upon. And dbl clicking the Path column is the most straightforward way to do it.

run_history_increase_run_count_on_open_path will increment the run count for the item, not the opened path.
This is working as expected in 1424b. (double click path column and right click -> Open path)

I am considering a separate option to increment the run count for the opened path itself.

Update, as promised:
Just upgraded to 1424b (portable, in case it matters) and:
- Double clicking the Path of a file does not increase the run count of the file - it's understood that it is not expected to increase the path's run count for now
- "Open path" on the file works as expected, the run count of the file is increased
- "Open path" on the Path column, which I guess is the same as dbl-clicking it, doesn't work as expected

Is it possible that I'm updating the portable Everything version the wrong way - I'm just replacing the Everything.exe/lng files from the new .zip file (after exiting Everything and stopping its service). Should I update/delete something in the auto-generated files (*.ini, *.csv, ...)?

I assume Everything is using an old run history setting.
I'm not sure which exact setting is causing the trouble -I am unable to reproduce the issue my end



This is what I see in a fresh install:
Double clicking the Path of a file = does not increase the run count of the file.
"Open path" on the file = does not increase the run count of the file.
"Open path" on the Path column = does not increase the run count of the file.

Enabling Tools -> Options -> Advanced -> run_history_increase_run_count_on_open_path:
Double clicking the Path of a file = Increases the run count of the file.
"Open path" on the file = Increases the run count of the file.
"Open path" on the Path column = Increases the run count of the file.

This is currently a limitation with disabling full row select.
It will be fixed in the next update.
I have also added a run_history_increase_path_run_count_on_open_path option for the next update.
