Everything Search in a multi-monitor setup

Post by Jose Hidalgo »

Hi guys, here's the matter. :)

My desktop PC is connected to (1) its monitor, and (2) a TV set (coming in a few days), in an extended desktop configuration.

What's peculiar is that the monitor is in my office, and the TV set is in the living room. Those two rooms are far apart : they're not even in the same floor of my house! There's a 15m fiber optic HDMI 2.1 cable that ensures the connection. So I can never see those two screens at the same time.

I'd like to be able to use Everything Search on each of those screens alternatively, depending on the room I'm in. But I'm afraid that when I press the Toggle window hotkey (Alt+Space) on my Bluetooth keyboard, Everything Search will always launch on my monitor (like currently), and never on the TV set.

Would there be a way for Everything Search to detect the active screen (the one with the mouse in it) every time the Toggle window hotkey is pressed (maybe by just detecting the mouse position?), and automatically appear on such screen? That would solve everything for me.

If that's an existing feature, then great. If not, I hope that can be added easily. What do you think? ;)

Thanks in advance!

Everything 1.5 has a show_window_on_monitor_from_cursor advanced setting:

To show the Everything window on the monitor from the cursor:
  • In Everything 1.5, from the Tools menu, click Options.
  • Click the Advanced tab on the left.
  • To the right of Show settings containing, search for:
    cursor
  • Select: show_window_on_monitor_from_cursor
  • Set the value to: true
  • Click OK.

Wow @void , it's like you read my mind  That looks perfect! :D

One more reason to update my current 1.4.1.1024 I guess. Let's go!
And once again, thank you so much for an incredibly useful software! :D

EDIT - What would be the right way to update? Allow me to explain.
- Right now I have Everything 1.4.1 installed, as a normal user, plus the Everything service
- My 1.4.1 settings and data are in %APPDATA%\Everything
- Everything 1.5a will install in a separate folder, so I will have two different installs, at least temporarily
- I'll need to exit 1.4.1 before executing 1.5a, otherwise there may be a conflict with the Toggle window hotkey
- Once 1.5a is installed I can import all settings, history, etc.

Here are my questions :
  1. When installing 1.5a, should I also ask it to install the Everything service? (it's already installed by 1.4.1, but maybe 1.5a has a different one?)
  2. Once all my 1.4.1 settings, history, etc, are imported, should I uninstall 1.4.1? Won't it delete anything that could be used by 1.5a? (e.g. the Everything service)
... or maybe I should just backup the whole 1.4.1 %APPDATA% folders (Local with the db, and Roaming with the settings), and then uninstall 1.4.1 entirely BEFORE installing 1.5a. What do you think?

Sorry for the delay in my reply.

EDIT - What would be the right way to update?
You can run Everything 1.4 and Everything 1.5 alpha at the same time.
Everything 1.5 alpha runs in separate "alpha instance".

From your setup, please try the following:
  • In Everything 1.4, from the Tools menu, click Options.
  • Click the Keyboard tab on the left.
  • Clear your hotkey and click OK.
  • Install Everything 1.5.
  • Import your Everything 1.4 settings.

installing 1.5a, should I also ask it to install the Everything service?
Yes.

(it's already installed by 1.4.1, but maybe 1.5a has a different one?)
Everything 1.5a has a different one.
Both can be installed and run at the same time.

Once all my 1.4.1 settings, history, etc, are imported, should I uninstall 1.4.1?
If you find Everything 1.5 works well for you, then yes, uninstall Everything 1.4.

Won't it delete anything that could be used by 1.5a? (e.g. the Everything service)
Uninstalling Everything 1.4 will not interfere with your Everything 1.5 installation.

... or maybe I should just backup the whole 1.4.1 %APPDATA% folders (Local with the db, and Roaming with the settings)
Always a good idea to backup your %APPDATA%\Everything folder.

and then uninstall 1.4.1 entirely BEFORE installing 1.5a. What do you think?
There's no need to uninstall Everything 1.4.
Everything 1.4 and Everything 1.5 alpha can be installed at the same time.
Uninstalling Everything 1.4 can be done at anytime.

Things will change once Everything 1.5 is in beta.
The 1.5 beta version will overwrite the 1.4 installation.

Thank you so much. That sounds amazing. :D

Will 1.5 beta be notified as a potential update via 1.5 alpha, or will we need to check this site manually?

I will send out notifications for the beta release.

Notifications are disabled by default.

You can check for notifications under Help -> Check for Updates and Tools -> Options -> General -> Check for updates on startup.
