MacOS Everything badly needed!

Post by grebl »

It's been a while since anyone has said it but --- Everything very badly needs to come to the Mac! Spotlight is a giant, lumbering, monster that is designed not to give results on any cross-platform drives (e.g. EXFAT) and the lack of ability to control what is indexed is crippling -- because it never finishes! Using Alfred doesn't help because it uses Spotlight, but at least it can find things and not completely forget what files used to exist like Dory from Finding Nemo. In my desperation I tried running fsearch out of MacPorts and for a little while I could remember what it was like to be able to search and find files. But Fsearch barely integrates with the OS. I may have to run parallels all the time just so I can use Everything but again it won't solve the OS integration problem. I'd legit pay for this software, as I'm sure many would, because Spotlight indexing is so, so, so stupid.

Sadly, The suggestion will not able to archived in a foreseeable future.
Everything is good not because itself but also because Windows is doing all the works for Everything, and macOS not provide similar service, therefore the suggestion may not able to be fulfilled.

Hi, I created an account just to second this. Everything is truly a masterpiece, and nothing like it comes close on MacOS, though I will continue experimenting with ProFind. I would pay $100 up front for something like this, and that’s just for personal use because it can be so insanely helpful when trying to aggregate the systems files as a whole.

I have successfully gotten Everything to run on MacOS 15.6 (Intel) with Wine with no startup issues or anything like that, however, it works very slowly, and I haven’t had time yet to see if it’s something I can fix, but it did work for about 600k files after a minute or 2, and search worked as expected, but it either hangs or takes too long when trying to index the entire system, so for now, I will likely have to do certain folders and sub folders in the system one at a time.

Instead of remaking the app for windows, if it’s easier, maybe you could fix some translations for Wine so that we can run it on macOS, because macOS is mess.

I’m stuck with fd and command line, which isn’t horrible, but it’s still very hard to aggregate the entire filesystem.

If a macOS app is not within reach, perhaps publishing the source code for the database storage format and some of the key functions would be beneficial, even if you had to pay to see it, or maybe even just a library.
