Everything suddenly hangs when clicking or scrolling (allow_lvm workaround)

Post by kwon1h »

Today, the problem appeared suddenly while I was using Everything 1.4.1.1009. The application starts normally, but clicking inside its window or scrolling the results list causes it to become unresponsive. I do not know what triggered the problem.

I updated to Everything 1.5.0.1424b (x64) today and reinstalled it, but the problem persisted.

System:
- Windows 11 26H2, build 26300.9711
- Everything 1.4.1.1009 before the update; 1.5.0.1424b (x64) after updating today
- Approximately 1.8 million indexed items on NTFS volumes C:, D: and E:

PowerToys was not running when I reproduced the issue. During diagnosis, the hang stack repeatedly showed Windows UI Automation and ListView message handling. Setting allow_lvm=0 in the machine-wide Everything.ini stopped the hangs. Clicking, scrolling, and searching then worked with the same index. The underlying cause is unknown; this setting is currently a workaround.

Are you using a screen reader? or Screenpipe?

\No, I wasn’t using a screen reader or Screenpipe when the issue occurred. I only noticed UIAutomationCore in the hang stack, and I don’t know what triggered it.

i experienced this bug as I've been developing a new markdown viewer for Windows File Explorer (and it works perfectly with Everything 1.5 too). So i've been in a unique position to experience this bug in real time.

Here's the fix with more details from my Claude coding session:

TL;DR

Windows 11 ver 26300.9711

**Workaround:**
close Everything (including tray icon app)
edit C:\Program Files\Everything\Everything.ini (as admin)
add or change: allow_lvm=0
Save, then restart Everything

---

**Everything 1.5 hangs on any click when the Codex computer-use helper is running. Fixed with allow_lvm=0**

**System:** Everything 1.5.0.1418b (x64), Windows 11 Pro build 26300.9711 (Insider), OpenAI Codex desktop 26.1021.3705.0 with computer use turned on.

**Symptoms:** at Everything startup the folder list appears for an instant, goes blank, then "reloads." After that, any click, scroll or menu leaves Everything "Not Responding." Deleting and rebuilding the index database didn't help.

**What I measured during a hang:**
- The UI thread runs at about 90% of one core. It isn't waiting on any other process; Wait Chain Traversal shows it in SendMessage to another thread of Everything itself.
- Private memory climbs from 3.7 GB to 5.4 GB in about a minute, with no file I/O.
- `uiautomationcore.dll` is loaded in the hung process.

**Trigger:** every hang (5 on 10/27) came within a few minutes of a Codex computer-use session starting (`codex-computer-use.exe`, which reads windows through UI Automation). No screen reader or Screenpipe is in use. This matches t=18018 and openai/codex#45121.

**Workaround:**
close Everything (including tray icon app)
edit C:\Program Files\Everything\Everything.ini (as admin)
add or change: allow_lvm=0
Save, then restart Everything

Should fix the issue completely, **even with the Codex helper still running.**

**Suggestion:** an outside UI Automation client reading a list of millions of items probably shouldn't be able to pin the UI thread and grow memory by gigabytes. Maybe the list's UIA/LVM handling could be limited to the visible items, or capped?

---

Hope this helps
