How do I instantly show a file's containing folder in tree view?

Post by popit42 »

I can't tell if I'm blind or just still new to this program, but I'm trying to clean up a bunch of duplicates and I can't seem to find a simple way to make the files that I select show their containing folders other than right-clicking, opening "path" in explorer & then navigating upwards. I'd like to think I'm relatively competent with these types of things, but I haven't found a similar request, so-

TLDR: I need help finding a setting, modifier or anything of the sort to have the tree view highlight/move to the folder containing the items I select

Drag the file to the folder sidebar title bar.
-or-
Right click under Path column and under the Parent folder submenu, click Explore in Everything.

I can't seem to drag any files, paths or folders to that (or the "Everything" underneath it)

& I know about the right-click & explore, but I'm going through a lot of files & folders (& realizing how poorly I first sorted them), so I need it to just show me where the file is from in the tree view when I click on it, without going to that folder, so I can compare the duplicates & deal with their files easily. I doubt that's already a setting, so do you know if there is any way I'd be able to make it do that myself?

Since I'm used to wording things poorly, the events I'm hoping to make happen are;

1. Populate search results for duplicates
2. Single-click on one of the resulting files
3. Folder tree view automatically expands to show containing folder
4. If possible, highlights the folder, but doesn't replace main view of the listed duplicates (not as important, I can probably deal with that one using the built-in tabs)
You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.

Please try enabling search_edit_drag_accept_files:
  • In Everything 1.5, from the Tools menu, click Options.
  • Click the Advanced tab on the left.
  • To the right of Show settings containing, search for:
    drag
  • Select: search_edit_drag_accept_files
  • Set the value to: true
  • Click OK.
  • Close your Everything search window.
  • Re-open your Everything search window.
I will depreciate this setting in the next update.
It's getting carried over from Everything 1.4 and there's no good reason to ever disable it.

3. Folder tree view automatically expands to show containing folder
Everything doesn't have an option to do this.
I will consider such an option. (something like track_active_item_in_solution_explore in VS)

For now, you can set Everything to explore to a file/folder with a keyboard shortcut.
For example, to set Everything to explore a file/folder in a new tab:
  • In Everything 1.5, from the Tools menu, click Options.
  • Click the Keyboard tab on the left.
  • To the right of Show commands containing, search for:
    explore
  • Select: File | Explore in Everything (New Tab)
  • Click Add....
  • Press a keyboard shortcut and click OK.
  • Click OK.

I'm not sure if this will work for your needs, but the this thread might be helpful.

I've set it up so that a middle-click opens the folder containing that file.
At least for me, it's really convenient. Including when used in combination with the Ctrl key.
