[Solved] Possible changes to the instance exiting prompt

Post by Herkules97 »

The prompt to terminate or wait current process that is exiting have keyboard shortcuts.
It's a minor thing, rare to happen..But if I'm exiting and I want to do other stuff with wasd+t without waiting for the prompt to appear so I can remove its focus(cause the prompt ruins flow), it will terminate the task resulting in progress loss since last save. This is most applicable to my Monolith instance, as it takes the longest to exit and guarantees the prompt. It is also the one this happened to, fortunately it was after the journal size changes I did so no rebuild. I don't always have 84GB commit to spare for its rebuild :D.

There are at least 2 other possible solutions.
No focus for the prompt.
Immediately open the prompt so I can right away click it off.

I don't think I've ever accidentally terminated in the past before this latest time..But it should be a customisable mechanic so it can never happen.

I would like to keep the Mnemonic keyboard shortcuts.

The next update will prevent the prompt from stealing focus.

Yeah but for the first solution you could make it customisable like the other ones. Defaults could still be t and w.
But if focus isn't gained, maybe it will fix the issue.

The wait dialog will popup in the background, it will flash in the taskbar, and you'll have to manually bring it into focus.

You can customize the button text:
Exit Everything (File -> Exit)
Open your Everything.ini in the same location as your Everything.exe
Change the following line:
localization_strings=
to:
localization_strings=&Wait=Wait;&Terminate=Terminate

Save changes and restart Everything.

Isn't that just the text? The shortcuts would still be t and w?
It's most an issue in video games with wasd and when t is for chatting. Latest time I terminated, I ended up waiting with w while moving and then when I wanted to chat it came up and t is chat :D

But of course if I can remove the shortcuts using this localisation, that would be the first of 3 solutions.

Though maybe make focus gain a customisable option? Some might want focus, it's how it has worked this entire time and at least some are surely used to it.

The letter after the & is used as the keyboard shortcut.
The above localization_strings setting removes these keyboard shortcuts.

Everything should never steal focus.
It is a bug.

Oh so that is the first solution..Why not mention it in the first reply 🤔

I see, so this is just a long-standing issue that is being fixed? If only Steam and Notepad++ had the same sort of mindset..

Just one more curiosity, why DOES it take the prompt time to come up? Does it not right away know the program is in the process of exiting?

When you exit Everything a shutdown mutex is created.
So Everything knows when another process is shutting down.

The Wait/Terminate dialog is shown if Everything doesn't exit on its own after 10 seconds.
The 10 second delay is done on purpose to avoid showing the Wait/Terminate dialog.
Ideally, if you exit Everything and relaunch Everything, you'll never see the wait/terminate dialog.

It could probably be redesigned so the shutdown initiated time is stored somewhere and if Everything has already been shutting down for 10+ seconds the Wait/Terminate dialog could be shown immediately.
I'll consider this for a future version of Everything.

I run EBV instances immediately after exiting. This is so I don't have to forget about starting them up, for programs that can't keep this sort of "mutual exclusion" I do sometimes forget to start them for hours.
So that's why I always see it if the instance is big enough, which is around 3GB Private Bytes.

Also in writing the above, I was exiting an instance just to make sure and yes, when the instance starts again it does steal focus.
So if you are trying to prevent focus stealing, maybe this is already on the way of removing it for the prompt.
As in the main interface window itself opens after a start and takes focus from what I am doing.

To prevent Everything from stealing focus:
  • In Everything 1.5, from the Tools menu, click Options.
  • Click the Advanced tab on the left.
  • To the right of Show settings containing, search for:
    attach
  • Select: set_foreground_window_attach_thread_input
  • Set the value to: false
  • Click OK.

Are you sure? I just restarted twice to make sure it wasn't a fluke and with the setting the behaviour is exactly the same.
I am using 1423b however, so is it a fixed issue in 1424b?

This is not a fix in 1424b, set_foreground_window_attach_thread_input has been around for a long time.

It will depend on how you launch Everything and if you change focus to something else.

For example, with set_foreground_window_attach_thread_input disabled:
Launch Everything from the taskbar, focus stays on the taskbar.
A couple seconds later the Everything window shows and gains focus.

Launch Everything from the taskbar, switch to another program.
A couple seconds later the Everything window shows, but will not gain focus, the Everything taskbar button will flash.
Are you seeing Everything steal focus when switching to another program after launching Everything?

Yes, I was restarting it while writing the reply maybe 5 times(2 known with the option, 3 maybe without it) and every time it went from Firefox to EBV in the foreground with focus.

I do want it to get focus if I open from tray, just not on the initial start.
This would also make it consistent with the terminate/wait prompt later when it stops stealing focus.
It's of course much less impactful, I can't accidentally terminate any instance when it does it. But..You restart and at no point does it get focus for the initial start and your flow isn't ruined. That should be how all programs work.

Some I run do it this way, but then others decide to steal focus..Some in multiple steps. Steam does it maybe 3 times. I alt-tab, it focuses, I alt-tab again, it does it again and maybe a third time. So now I just give up and sit and wait for the stupid thing to start. All for the privilege of 2GB bloatware in the background 😎
Same with Notepad++, I think it does it twice and I restart it often 😭
