Problems making es.exe work for me

Post by Randy31416 »

I can't get es.exe to give me a sorted list of files on a disk. I've tried may combinaitons of options. The following is a sample of the problem.

The command string: "E:\Net Tools\File Everything\es.exe" -size -dc -dm -full-path-and-name -sort path-ascending -size-width 12 g:\*.* >h:\junk.txt

An extracted sample of the output:

Code: Select all

Folders and files are sorted separately.
Folders are shown first.

Sorting by path will sort by the path part first, then by name.

Please try sorting by full path with
-sort full-path

If I change "-sort path" into "-sort full-path" (and make no other changes) all I get is "Error 4: Expected switch parameter." followed by the help text for es.exe (which does not list a full-path sort option among its options). The es.exe version is "ES 1.1.0.26". I also tried everything.exe but it too is not happy with either the original or the modified command options. So I'm still perplexed.

I just noticed that there is a more recent version of es.exe. I downloaded that, and got the same result. I also tried the bare "-s" option, which the help text says will sort by full path, but it too gives the same unsorted result as the original post in this topic. ("-s" was the first option I tried on this search for a sort, well before the first post was made.)

-sort full-path
requires Everything 1.5 and ES 1.1.0.37 or later.

Sorry, I thought I had this ES version on the main website.

Could you please send the output with -sort full-path

I don't have a solution for Everything 1.4.
With
-sort path
, the results will sort by file/folder, path part, then name.
You could export to CSV and sort in Excel.

Re: Problems making es.exe work for me

Post by Randy31416 »

Everything 1.5 and ES 1.1.0.37 are both worse and better.

[Note that the -dm and -dc fields are not constant-width any more; leading zeroes are suppressed, and no text aligns neatly beyond the first of these fields. So I added -date-format 1 to get alignable results.]

I report two tests here. The first uses "-sort full-path", and the output is very scrambled. The second uses "-s" by itself, and the output is sorted width-first (I think that is the term) not depth-first (which I would prefer) so that all folders are listed before all files at the next level. I can live with this, though, so I will sign out here unless you want "-sort full-path" tested more (glad to help if so). I'll just print an extract of the first of these results (the scrambled -sort full-path test).

Thank you very much for this program, by the way: there is hope for the human race when something this excellent is created by it.

The first test command line is

Code: Select all

"E:\Net Tools\File Everything\es.exe" -size -dc -dm -full-path-and-name -sort full-path -size-width 15 -date-format 1 g:\ >h:\junk.txt
and an extract, starting at the top, of the results is

Code: Select all

Re: Problems making es.exe work for me

Post by therube »

From your original post :
"E:\Net Tools\File Everything\es.exe" -size -dc -dm -full-path-and-name -sort path-ascending -size-width 12 g:\*.* >h:\junk.txt

simply pipe the output to SORT:
"E:\Net Tools\File Everything\es.exe" -size -dc -dm -full-path-and-name -sort path-ascending -size-width 12 g:\*.* | sort /+48 >h:\junk.txt

(In the, sort /+48, the +48 might not be correct - depending on how the columns are laid out, but whatever character number the 'G', of G:\, is, that is the number you'll want to use. In your second example, it would be, sort /+62)

Note that the -dm and -dc fields are not constant-width any more; leading zeroes are suppressed, and no text aligns neatly beyond the first of these fields.
On my end, in Windows itself, I have long set:
Region and Language | Formats -> Additional settings...
Time, to: hh:mm tt & hh:mm:ss tt
&
Date, to: MM/dd/yyyy & dddd, MMMM dd, yyyy

to alleviate "width" issues.

Thank you for the output.
and an extract, starting at the top, of the results is
These results are still sorted by name.

Could you please send the output from:
es -version

es -get-everything-version

I suspect ES is still talking to Everything 1.4.

Code: Select all

C:\> e:
E:\> cd net tools
E:\Net Tools> cd file everything
E:\Net Tools\File Everything> es.exe -version
1.1.0.37
E:\Net Tools\File Everything> es.exe -get-everything-version
1.5.0.1418
E:\Net Tools\File Everything> es.exe -size -dc -dm -full-path-and-name -sort full-path -size-width 15 -date-format 1 g:\ >h:\junk.tx
The last command still produces the garbled sorting I posted earlier.

Thank you for the version information.

Everything is incorrectly sorting by name.
I am not sure why at this stage.. I am unable to produce the issue my end.

Could you please send a debug log:
  • In the Everything GUI, from the Tools menu, under the Debug submenu, click Start Debug Logging...
  • Perform your es.exe search with -sort full-path
  • In the Everything GUI, from the Tools menu, under the Debug submenu, click Stop Debug Logging...
--This will open your %TEMP%\Everything Debug Log.txt
  • Could you please upload this file in a bug report.
  • The log will show what sort Everything is receiving and supplying to ES.

Have you disabled Tools -> Options -> Advanced -> ipc_pipe ?
Please try adding -ipc3 to your es query to enforce an Everything 1.5 request.
Instead of -sort fullpath, please try including the following in your es call:
sort:fullpath

I've sent the bug report.

I set ipc_pipe to false and added -ipc3, and got "Error 7: Unable to send IPC message or bad IPC reply." on any test. So I tried all four combinations of ipc_pipe (true, false) and -ipc3 (present or not present), and got the error on anything except true, notpresent (the way it was).

So I tried sort:fullpath on my standard test case, and -->> it works. The file is sorted completely, depth-first (great -- just what I wanted). For the record this was the command

Code: Select all

"E:\Net Tools\File Everything\es.exe" -size -dc -dm -full-path-and-name sort:fullpath -size-width 15 -date-format 1 g:\ >h:\junk.txt

Just noticed, though, that all folders are listed before any files when "sort:fullpath" is specified, and the size of the folders is not reported. I think this disappeared when I installed the newest version of es.exe and everything.exe. For the time being, then, I think I'll go back to the earlier version and use the pipe-to-sort suggestion from therube (above).

[EDIT START] Nope. The newest version Everything-1.5.0.1418b.x64-Setup.exe and ES-1.1.0.37.x64.zip were the version which gave me the total size for folders, even thought the sorting was off. So I'll use this newest version followed by a pipe sort.[EDIT CEASE]

In any case, I've got something that works, so I am content, but I'll be glad to try stuff out when you want.

Note that because of the way Everything sorts; "code points" vs. alpha, results may vary from "expected".

In Everything...
"A9" < "a52" - the 9 & 52 are treated as numerical values, where '9' < '52'
- (rather then 5 < 9, in an alpha sort)
"file+folder" < "file-folder" - the '-' is ignored, so it is actually comparing; "file+folder" < "filefolder", where '+' < 'f'
- (rather then + < -, in an alpha sort)
[& i'm confused on that one, cause + is < -, yet Windows sort says otherwise?]
[a UNIX sort -d, dictionary, then does sort + < -]

Alpha on the left, Everything on the right.
(I've removed folders [to make things a bit clearer, hopefully], by adding file:, to the search.)
.
Everything - SORT - alpha vs code point.png

Code: Select all

C:\out\SALAMANDER\humanity>dir f* /b
file+folder
file-only

C:\out\SALAMANDER\humanity>dir f* /b | sort
file-only
file+folder

C:\out\SALAMANDER\humanity>dir f* /b | \bin\unix\sort -d
file+folder
file-only

C:\out\SALAMANDER\humanity>dir f* /b | \bin\unix\sort
file-only
file+folder

Thank you for the debug logs.
2026-07-21 03:10:14.253: Admin: 1
IPCv3 currently doesn't work if Everything is running as admin.
Thank you for bringing this issue to my attention.
It will fix for the next update.

For now, please make sure Everything is installed correctly and running as a standard user:
  • In Everything, from the Tools menu, click Options.
  • Click the General tab on the left.
  • Check Store settings and data in %APPDATA%\Everything.
  • Uncheck Run as administrator.
  • Check Everything Service. (Please make sure this is tick-checked and not square-checked)
  • Click OK.
  • Exit Everything (from the File menu, click Exit).
  • Restart Everything.
Please make sure [Administrator] is not shown in the GUI window title bar.

-sort full-path will work once Everything 1.5 is running as a standard user.

I'm going to stick with "run as administrator" because that fills in the size of folders and run as standard user does not. Also the -sort full-path puts all folders at all levels before any files, so I am going to stick with the pipe into the pure alpha sort.exe which puts folders and files in a purely alpha order, better for me. Thanks very much for your interest in getting all this put into order, and again I am astonished at what a good program you have created. There is a term in retail business that sticks in my mind -- "category killer" -- and you have surely made one of those. There is nothing I have seen that can touch it.
