Currently there is a global color_filters option, which is very helpful. I use it to highlight videos a different colour so I don't accidentally delete them if I see the thumbnail is blurry, thinking it's a blurry photo.
I think any colouring should be done via the search equation on a property (style: etc) rather than a global option. People can emulate a global option by putting it on an inherited filter, although I'm sure no harm in the global option being retained too.
The reason for this is that colourisation via the search equation would be very useful in colourising according to the task you are doing to highlight different things. Sometimes I want items with _ in the midst of the name to highlight, at other times certain keywords such as FOT, FEU and SYRPAL at other times a different keyword, at times different keywords coming out different colours eg KEY coming out one colour and DETAILS in another, and it's useful if this is preset in the filter I am using.
Looking ahead, the more sophisticated colourisation/stylisation can be (background, foreground, bold) the more useful it will be for special tasks; and sometimes a match should style the whole item, sometimes just the matched phrase, sometimes matching partial sometimes whole word, usually case sensitive but not necessarily. In a certain task I do when an item has _ in it would be good to highlight the whole item name, when KEY and FOT in, useful if they would just matched those characters and come out different colours, eg in bromus-FOT9-KEY then KEY might be blue and whole-word and FOT magenta and beginning-word (or whole word pattern that includes the trailing digits), both case sensitive.

Complex color filters are on my TODO list.

It won't happen for Everything 1.5.
