When I check for updates by using Everything > Help > Check for Updates,
I get a message saying "Unable to check for updates: failed to send version request".
This happens on v1.4 and v1.5.
What could be causing this? I am on WinXP.

Re: Failed check for updated version
Probably something on your end. Here no such issues ("Everything is up to date").
You should get a Save As dialog box when entering one of the following URLs in your default browser
(Note that 1.5a currently reports version 1331 being the newest)
Other than that: try a reboot

Re: Failed check for updated version
This entry in Everything.ini might help in Everything version 1.4.1.1022 and/or Everything 1.5.0.1337a:
In Everything, type in the following search and press ENTER:
In both versions I receive the message: "Everything is up to date!".
Code: Select all
beta_updates=1Code: Select all

@tuska:
beta updates for an alpha version. That's what I call a good update
Forgot to mention, @burgundy:
Are you running Everything 1.5 as administrator? (If so, it is shown in the titlebar)
Depending on settings, that might block internet access.

Re: Failed check for updated version
It's probable that WinXP doesn't support modern SSL crypto. A lot has happened in 20 years; certs, authorities, and the actual algorithms themselves.

This is the reason.It's probable that WinXP doesn't support modern SSL crypto
Everything now uses https with wininet to check for updates for security reasons.
wininet is essential Internet Explorer.
Internet Explorer on Windows XP cannot access voidtools.com over HTTPS due to changes in security, encryption and newer root certificates.
The next alpha update will use HTTP if you are on XP or earlier.

Re: Failed check for updated version
Everything v1.5 on WinXP gives the following message when updating from the menu after entering the command given above. Presumably this is to do with the WinXP issues mentioned.tuska wrote: Mon Feb 13, 2023 2:33 pm This entry in Everything.ini might help in Everything version 1.4.1.1022 and/or Everything 1.5.0.1337a:In Everything, type in the following search and press ENTER:Code: Select all
