Thumbnails not showing

Post by mczerski »

Hi, I have searched and tried to find a solution to my problem, but to no avail.
When via command line switch I direct Everything (ET) to open an efu format list of files containing jpg images, ET opens the list of files, but refuses to display it in the thumbnail view (Ctrl+Shift+2), and only image icons appear on the screen. The viewer (Alt+P) shows individual images correctly, and ET opens files in their native viewer as expected. A sample content of the efu is as follows:

Filename,Size,Date Modified,Date Created,Attributes
"I:\_Dokumenty\moje\Moje obrazy\Other\Prok\Archived\_COLLECTIONS Viewed with Comments\1518_N_.jpg",102651,"","",0
"I:\_Dokumenty\moje\Moje obrazy\Other\Prok\Archived\_COLLECTIONS Viewed with Comments\1537_N_.jpg",90354,"","",0

As regards its thumbnail view, ET works perfectly when instructed to list and display files (thumbnails) with the use of search commands or bookmarks created by ET.

As much as I really do appreciate and enjoy your ET, the software appears useless to me in most cases because of the aforementioned problem.

Your advice will be greatly appreciated.
Best regards, Marek

Everything treats file lists as read-only.

Everything will avoid accessing files in the file list.
(this includes icons and thumbnails)
This is to avoid accessing media, such as CDROM or DVDROM.

Showing a preview or opening the file is an exception.

Everything 1.5 (in development / English only at the moment) has an option to enable icons and thumbnails for file lists:
  • In Everything 1.5, type in the following search and press ENTER:
    /filelist_icons=1
  • If successful, filelist_icons=1 is shown in the status bar for a few seconds.
Type in the following search and press ENTER:
    /filelist_thumbnails=1
  • If successful, filelist_thumbnails=1 is shown in the status bar for a few seconds.

Thanks a lot for your guidelines and advice. I am rally happy :D to say that everything is OK with Everything. I followed your instructions and eventually got all what I needed, i.e. ET ver. 5 displays thumbnails of file lists. Grrrrrrrrreat!
One question:
I’d like to share two remarks with those who might want to follow your advice in this thread.
1. You wrote: "Everything 1.5 (in development / English only at the moment)".
Initial impression is that it is not quite so. Interestingly enough when I copied Everything.lng file from my 1.4 installation with the Polish localisation for 1.4 version, it occurred that the file was read by 1.5 without any problems and – for the time being – I may say it seems to work well, but I have not tested ver. 1.5 thoroughly yet. Should it occur that there are any problems with this localisation I will get back to you under a new topic.
2. I am using only portable versions of ET. The zip file with 1.5 offered to get downloaded to my 1.4 folder and I approved that although the system is set to download new files to a special folder. I thought that ver. 1.5 wanted to be unpacked to my former 1.4 version in order to inherit settings. This prediction occurred false, because not only did ET 1.5 ver. inherit anything from ver. 1.4 when installed to the folder of the 1.4 version, but then, when I imported settings, bookmarks and history into 1.5 from 1.4 it sill seemed to have some conflict(s) with the previous version so that once it worked as 1.4 should do, and on some other occasions it worked as a genuine 1.5 version. The solution to avoid such weird behaviour, is to create a new folder for 1.5 version and import settings, bookmarks and history from the former version.
One remark in this context: The portable version of 1.4 ET keeps everything.ini and bookmarks.csv files in its portable installation folder, but these are not the files that sould be imported to 1.5 version. The ini and csv files actually used in Win. 10 may be found in the following folder: [system disc]:\Users\[user name]\AppData\Roaming\Everything\
And one question: is there a way to import the ET database from ver. 1.4 to ver. 1.5 or is it at all reasonable to ask such question? :) I have a current huuuuuuuuge database with records from several huge discs and most of them are not connected to my machine only when needed. I simply hate the idea that I will have to scan each such disc that has been searched and save by ver. 1.4 in its database, but appears new to ver. 1.5. But if such import is unfeasible I will do that tedious search and still will be very happy thanks to your assistance!

Thanks again for your great help. Keep doing your excellent job, please :) In the era of the domination of IT moguls who cannot for years (and eventually never do) produce their software reasonably free of errors but nonetheless attempt to monopolize the market and "launder" our brains, It is so inspiring to see that there is a community of such competent, thoughtful and friendly people as those gathered around the Everything concept.

To import your settings from Everything 1.4 into Everything 1.5 (this will include your filelist settings):
  • In Everything 1.5a, from the Tools menu, click Import and Export Settings.
  • Select Import settings.
  • Click Next.
  • Click Browse....
  • Type in the following filename and press ENTER:
    %APPDATA%\Everything
  • Select your Everything.ini and click Open.
  • Click Import.
  • Check Restart Everything.
  • Click Finish.
Everything will restart to apply your old settings.

I had done that all exactly as you have just advised. And the import was successful in that it brought my custom UI, bookmarks etc. parameters from ET 1.4 to ET ver 1.5. However, it did not make ET ver 1.5 read the huge (more than 700 Mb) database with records covering my disc resources. And that was my question. Of course, ETver. 1.5 when started got immediately busy searching those 3 discs that were actually and are permanently connected to my machine, but did not retrieve any data concerning the other 17 discs that are connected only occassionally to my machine and have been previously searched by ET 1.4 and stored in that huge 700 Mb db. Anyway, thank you for your reply. Regards, Marek

The Everything 1.4 database is not compatible with Everything 1.5.

Everything 1.5 will build a fresh database on the initial startup.

Please consider making a backup of your Everything 1.4 indexes with db2efu.
You could then include this efu file in your Everything 1.5 indexes from Tools -> Options -> File lists.

Hi, this is my first post, and I have the exactly same problem.

1.4 doest have problem with show thumbnails (Ctrl+Shift+2) meawhile the 1.5 version doesnt show them. I followd the steps about /filelist_thumbnails=1, was successful (tryed several times), but It shows no changes.

Is there anything else that can be done?

Thank you for the bug report Gaudy,

Is Everything showing no thumbnails at all? for any file? or is it just (for example) jpg files?

Is Everything show an icon instead of a thumbnail?

Please make sure you are using the x64 version of Everything.

Could you please send a screenshot and your %APPDATA%\Everything\Everything-1.5a.ini to support@voidtools.com and I will investigate the issue.

Please make sure Everything 1.5 is running as a standard user:
  • In Everything, from the Tools menu, click Options.
  • Click the General tab on the left.
  • Check Store settings and data in %APPDATA%\Everything
  • Uncheck Run as administrator.
  • Check Everything Service. (Please make sure this is tick-checked and not square-checked)
  • Click OK.
  • Exit Everything (right click the Everything tray icon and click Exit).
  • Restart Everything.
Please ensure [Administrator] is not shown in the window caption.

If Everything was running as an administrator, please restart your PC after making the above changes.
