What does "Exclude files and folders" do?

I notice it is checked by default. When I run a search I get both files and folders in my results so the meaning of "Exclude files and folders" is not obvious. Is there documentation for this and other options? Thx

This option enables the exclude list below the check button.

I have renamed this to ''Enable exclude list'' for the next release of "Everything".
