Doing some experiments related to this thread, I notced that when Search as you type is disabled, switching to a different filter also requires an <Enter> before the filter is activated.
Is that by design?

Yes, this was by design.
The current query can only be updated by pressing the ENTER key.
Same applies to changing the Match Case/Path/etc options.
