Some time ago, I've followed the instructions in the link and didn't get it to work, the taskbar icon remained the default orange. I did not think much of it, but after an experiment today I realise that the coloured icon is actually working, but only for unnamed instances. And I'm always using named instances. Is there any solution for this?
Please make sure you extract the icon color of choice and rename it Everything.ico.
Where did you place your Everything.ico ?
Is Everything -> Tools -> Options -> General -> Store settings and data in %APPDATA%\Everything checked?
Is your Everything icon file named Everything.ico ?
Do you have Explorer -> Tools -> Folder Options -> View -> Hide extensions for known file types checked?
Have you named your Everything icon Everything.ico.ico?

I have a problem only with icon for taskbar group, changing color of tray icon working fine!
The same behavior is on another PC with Windows 7 x86/Everything 835b x86

All of that, actually. I run Everything x86 1.4.1.835 fully portable, the correct icon is extracted as Everything.ico in the same folder. I never hide extensions (I like full control). And Everything was indeed restarted. The odd thing is that an unnamed instance of Everything will show the expected changed icon colour, but my named instance always has the default orange colour. Maybe for this to work I need to rename the key in Applications to Everything (Instance Name)?
Please try renaming your Everything icon to:
Everything-<instance name>.ico
Yes, that works! I tried something like this, and came close, but no cigar. I used Everything (instance name).ico, because that is how the tray icon shows its tooltip.
Also, please, if that's not too much to ask, make it possible to use the system environment for paths here, so it becomes more portable this way (I think but do not bother if that requires much of your time)

Also, when I set the icon, this doesn't affect the taskbar as shown here; it appears in the systray and application only!
I converted the original 256x256 icon by hand into a clean svg. I tried to match the pixel original as closely as possible. Feel free to use this in any project.
