Re: How to block the automatic opening of the page in the browser?
imo Adblocker (of any sort) can't help you with this issue. Extension has no control of sites opened beyond browser. (I guess, it can't identify either you opened a .lnk file yourself or a software did that on behalf of you) (Not sure though)
I'm not suggesting to upgrade your GOM Player, but the developer uses Ad to generate revenue.
GOM Player Plus is ad-free to enhance user experience and faster speed.
I read somewhere that with registry hacks and/or modifying htaccess file will do the trick (but i won't provide any links to those sites). Sorry

Re: How to block the automatic opening of the page in the browser?
In a Mozilla browser, you can set the variable, StartWithLastProfile to 0, in http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profiles.ini_file.
That will force a prompt (to allow to select a particular Profile) to popup before your browser actually opens, allowing you the option to dismiss the dialog, stopping your browser from opening.
So an external link; from desktop shortcut, external email client, GOM... will prompt for a particular (browser) Profile to open, you dismiss the open at that point. Your browser never completes its open.

vanisk & therube - GOM Player (Normal Version)
also can be without pop-up ads, you just need to know how to disable POP-UP-ADS in the program settings (Preferences)

Look here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UeRkXqzXPUA
In newer versions, GOM does not work anymore.
And not I'm going to use a very old version of GOM.
If you find a way to work new version GOM Player, please write.

Re: How to block the automatic opening of the page in the browser?
I took a quick look at GOM (does nothing for me).
It appears related to the skin used?
Like Classic does not look to open your browser?
Classic also does not look to have that ad "side-panel" either?
(At one point, when I "closed" the program, I was left with some sort of popup.
So I guess it was not actually "closed".)
(Why would one use such a program, with ads?, in particular when there are other programs out there - without. And in particular in that I see nothing that makes GOM stand out?)

Re: How to block the automatic opening of the page in the browser?
therube - And why should I use other VLC programs, Media Player and other???., if GOM Player is better?
It includes more functions, includes intuitive buttons control (compared to other players), scrolling and much more. It is stable and plays any popular video format and plays even damaged video files.
There is no better video playback program, even though I used a lot of different players in my life.
And the fact that there is an advertisement does not mean that it is impossible to block. it's possible, you just have to find the perfect way.
Even f***ing pages open pages with ads, so it's not just GOM Player's fault!

Re: How to block the automatic opening of the page in the browser?
Oh, that popup is caused by popup.exe, so I renamed it to popup.exe.X.
Don't know if that will hold, but the program seemed unaffected.

Re: How to block the automatic opening of the page in the browser?
(If you want, try MPlayer & MPUI (GUI).
mplayer-for-windows
(Current version does not play av01 [AV1] encoded files.)
MPUI-hcb
(I only use the GUI, 600 KB .exe, from his site rather then the full mplayer/MPUI package.)
Yes, it can be hard switching from something you're comfortable with.)

Re: How to block the automatic opening of the page in the browser?
therube - Your Players do not support this type of video files.
.ext.crdownlaod
.ext.part
ext (mp4, avi, mkv etc.)
Your Players do not support: "Remember the recently interrupted playback location of all recently opened files"
GOM Palyer support/featured
Your Players do not support: Youtube URLs
and not support other
I deleted the file popup.exe in the GOM folder, so far I have not noticed the pop-up pages.

Re: How to block the automatic opening of the page in the browser?
.part files are certainly "supported".
I've even added 'part' as part of my Video filter in Everything (;part;srt;) .
(While srt won't be a video file, if I have an associated external .srt file, I want to be aware of that when I list "videos".)
Likewise I've associated .part with MPUI.exe (as in MPUI is the default file opener for .part files).
